Today we left Ho Chi Minh City and headed for Phnom Penh in Cambodia.

We took a bus that lasted about 7 hours. There are several bus companies but we particularly recommend the Mekong Express as they help with border crossing and you can allocate your seat beforehand. We thought it would be a standard bus ride but ten minutes in they came round with water, wipes, and a little lunch box from the local bakery.

When we got to the border we had a problem, we didn’t have US dollars on us for the visa, just Vietnamese dong. We had actually tried to get US dollars from a bank but it was not happening. Thankfully, the bus conductor sorted us out and we paid him after getting the visa. Word of advice: check how much the visa costs and what currency you can pay in!

Did you really travel if you didn’t have border control issues?

Whilst we were on the road on the Cambodian side a thunderstorm broke out. It was truly crazy – things were flying out into the road and rain was pelting onto the ground and bouncing back up. It pretty much rained for the rest of the night so we were glad to get showered and into Pjs at the hostel.

Has the rainy season come early this year?
