I spent a long weekend with my parents in Hamburg during September. Our primary reason for visiting was to see our relatives but here’s all the other fun stuff we did that I recommend to others:

  • Visit the Elbphilharmonie (free!). This is a stately music venue in the centre of Hamburg but attracts many tourists daily for the harbour views. Sadly we didn’t have time to watch a concert.

    Innovative concert venue

  • Go to Miniaturwunderland! Upon first thought it sounds like something for kids but as an adult you can really enjoy seeing places you’ve been to IRL but in miniature version! We saw grand canyon, parts of Italy, and more. A personal favourite was the ‘airport’ with planes actually taking off!

  • Watch a gig at the Cotton Club. We had a fabulous night seeing the Louisiana Syncopators covering some absolute classics! It’s a small venue but has good food and drinks!

  • Take a boat along the river. We boarded an unexpectedly fancy boat for a 1hr ride along the river. The guides made everything very amusing and we learned about how important the port of Hamburg is for Europe and beyond. Thousands of containers line up waiting to be shipped off somewhere…

Did you know I stayed in a container hostel once?

  • Have a day trip to Lübeck – this is a city about an hour away on the train that is distinguished with gothic buildings. The Holstentor – the gate to the city – is interestingly very crooked as a result of it sinking into the marshes. Go check it out for yourself!
