Took the kayak out for a spin this morning, all around the Twin beaches to a small island. The good thing about the island is that it was the only place our 3G worked (weirdly) so we ended up stopping there for quite some time.

A retreat from internet is good, but it did make me realise how dependent we are on it for reading reviews, booking hostels, and letting our Mums know we’re still safe. Our relationship with the Web is probably good and bad.

After returning the kayak we ordered some fresh fish and sizzling pork. Due to ‘Filipino time’ it took a while to arrive but it was very tasty.

As the evening approached we took a van to the town of El Nido and checked into our hostel. In all honesty it was a bit of a nightmare because a) the room had triple bunks and was VERY cramped, b) no soap in bathrooms and an apparent bug going round, c) there were hardcore rules which are annoying to adhere to once you’ve just come from the very free and spacious paradise beach hut, and d) Beth got sunstroke (not severe). After a debrief we decided to book another place online. Unfortunately, when we got to said place they didn’t actually have the room! This was pretty frustrating as it meant walking up and down the village in search of accommodation. Most places were full but we eventually found some beach huts with a vacancy. Lesson: book accommodation on the islands EARLY.
