Today we travelled from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai, a smaller place in the North. Only stopping here for one night as it’s convenient for getting to Laos.

We arrived by bus, which took about 3 hours with one stop. The most complicated part was booking the tickets online as there were loads of options (one included reserving tickets online then rushing to a 7-11 to pay- eh?!). The user researcher in me was raging.

Anyway, upon arriving we explored the local area and ended up paying a visit to the hilltribe museum, pretty apt after our tour yesterday. It was alright, but sort of ended up being the history of them growing Opium. Interesting:

In the evening we sat in the main square with a pad Thai and a beer, and watched as more and more people were going to the front to dance. At first we thought it was an organised show but it turns out that traditional Lanna dancing just casually happens at the weekend and anyone can join in. Beth didn’t hesitate to get up and shimmy with the locals and later roped me in to join too. The dance moves were quite easy but when done as a large group it looks impressive.
